Debt Slaves?

During ancient times, debt slavery, or forced work because of debt incurred, was common practice. Actually, even in modern times, such conditions exist.

In Brazil, a sugar cane-ethanol plantation was raided where more than 1000 laborers were found. They were said to be working 14 hours everyday, cutting sugar cane for ethanol production. It was said that these workers were debt slaves.
